Women's Ice Hockey in Great Britain and Northern Ireland

This page contains information about the structure of women's ice hockey in Great Britain and links to all British women's ice hockey clubs and organisations.

Competitions

British Premier League

This is top level of British women's league ice hockey.

Entry to the Premier League can only be done on promotion from Division One. Normally the Division One champions from the North and South leagues will play off for one promotion chance. The winner of the play off games then play the bottom placed Premier team for promotion/relegation. See Premier teams

Premier League Playoffs

The top four finishers in the Premier league qualify for the playoffs. The games take place over a single weekend and in a single venue. The Premier league winners play the forth placed team (and second play third). The winners of Saturdays matches play a final on the Sunday evening. Saturdays losing teams playoff for 3rd spot.

Division One

Teams entering league competition for the first time enter Division one, however this does not mean that all D1 teams are new or inexperienced. The top D1 clubs are generally very competitive and feature skilled players and professional organisation.  There have been talks of creating a Division Two league (in the South) to enable new teams to develop and gain promotion to D1, to date this has never gone past the discussion phase.

Division One has two leagues split North and South, both are considered as separate championships. See Division One Teams

Division One Playoffs

The top four finishers from D1 play off over the same weekend and venue as the Premier League. D1 North champions play D1 South runners up (and vice versa). The winners of Saturdays matches play a final on the Sunday evening. Saturdays losing teams playoff for 3rd spot. The winners of the D1 playoffs are considered as overall Division One champions.

EIHA Knockout Cup

Introduced fairly recently, the Knockout cup is open to all registered and insured teams. Teams are drawn at random on a home or away basis. Teams from different leagues can meet and winners from each round progress through to the next round. The final two teams meet in the Knockout cup final.
