Frequently Asked Questions

Who are we looking for?

We require girls/women  that are very keen to play and can skate very well and are prepared to train hard to improve. Experience of team sports is an advantage and a good attitude is definitely required.

I play ice hockey already, can I sign for the Comets?

Locally based players: If Cardiff is your nearest club (i.e. you have moved to or will be moving to the area) we will normally automatically accept you into the club.

Players living elsewhere in the UK who wish to tryout for the team should bear in mind that we expect all players to attend team practice. You must be able to travel to practice and games from your home location. For more information email us.

Players living outside the UK can get more information about the team and British women's ice hockey by emailing us

How well established is the team?

The Comets were formed in the summer of 1994 and have competed in full league competition ever since

Are there any age limits?

The Comets are an adult team competing in a senior national league, we do however accept junior players into the club. Female players in Junior teams can usually be included on the Comets roster on a casual basis i.e. priority will be given for players to attend junior league fixtures.  Adult beginners are welcome though you must be a very good skater (see below) and should be aiming to play league hockey. There is currently no women's recreational team in Cardiff but the Cardiff Titans recreational team is open to both men and women.

Please note that due to new regulations introduced for the 2007/2008 season a lower limit of 16 years of age is being imposed on the women's leagues.

Players under 16 need to join the Cardiff junior development program.

How good does my skating have to be?

The Comets are adult league ice hockey team and not a skating school. You must be a very strong skater before starting ice hockey. Imagine trying to join a field hockey team before you have learnt to run and walk.  Taking skating lessons is a great way to learn the fundamentals of ice skating but there is no substitute for lots and lots of practice. The longer and harder you work on your skating skills before starting hockey, the more you will benefit from the Comets training sessions.

What equipment do I need to start?

When you first start, you will require hockey skates, stick, gloves and a helmet, we can normally loan you some equipment for you to tryout. If you then find you like the sport and wish to take it up properly, the best thing is to buy some used kit which is usually advertised in free ads, newspapers or the players will know of second hand kit for sale. As your skills improve you will have more of an idea of what brand and style of equipment suits you best. If you are buying new equipment, make sure that you get the correct team colours i.e. black helmet, black shorts, black gloves. The club will provide shirts and socks for practice and games.

When are the training sessions?
Our training slot is currently on a Wednesday evening. This training slot is subject to change depending on the demand for ice time.

Registration and insurance

To play in the team, you have to be registered with the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) This fee is for the EIHA and lasts one year commencing from 1st August to 31st July for one year. This covers your registration and basic insurance; you may wish to take out your own personal insurance as well as the above. For registration you will be required to fill in details on the registration form and provide 2 passport photographs along with the current fee (made payable to Cardiff Ladies Ice Hockey). We will also require a copy of your birth certificate or passport if you are a new member. Full registrations run out after 31st Jan, the club can still register you, but you will only be able to play in conference/challenge games then, as you have to register before that date to be eligible to play in league games.

When is the season / games?

Our season generally runs from September to May. We play 18 Premier league games, 9 home and 9 away. The team also compete in the EIHA knock out cup, tournaments, challenge games and end of season play offs when we qualify.

What does it cost?

There is an annual club membership (email us for details). Club membership fees can be paid in one lump sum year or split into month per month for 12 months. There are two rates for club fees:

Full fee - League Team - players that have regular league ice time pay a fee which includes training on ice once a week, eligible to participate in league games, away game travel, voting right at club meetings, use of team strip for practice and games and involvement in all Comets activities

Reduced fee - Juniors and Rookies - Players that are not regularly selected for league games pay an 'in training fee' which includes training on ice once a week, voting right at club meetings, use of team strip for practice and games and involvement in all Comets activities. Players in training may be asked to participate in matches but do not have to pay the full fee until they become regular league players.

Can I try out the sport before joining the team?

Your first training session is free. If your skating is good enough and you wish to continue, you will need to pay for on ice practice. There are no 'contracts' and players can join or leave the team when they like. All we ask is that you attend practice regularly and keep your subs up to date.

Who is involved in the running of the club?

We consider ourselves to be an efficient organised well run club. The club is run by some of the team members, coaches & relatives/supporters of the club on a completely VOLUNTARY basis.
